#mycaterham - What does Caterham School mean to pupils?

What Does Community Mean?

BBC News Report

At Westminster School, Marie Theresa devised a film programme to respond to the Year 8 theme Landscapes. The project became ‘Moving Landscapes’ where pupils were introduced to Premiere Pro for the first time, to explore how to work with still and moving images to create their own visual story. Pupils moved through techniques which included camera shots, theory of pacing, colour cinematography, transitions, audio editing and much more.

At Caterham, recognising that students were fascinated by film theory and practice, Marie Theresa designed and delivered film programmes that sat within co-curricular and curriculums, each with clear objectives to feed students’ curiosity. She facilitated opportunities for students to lead their own projects, for example engaging with the local community and charities to create animations to communicate their voices.

The programmes boosted students’ confidence with filmic practices in a more public arena and allowed them to evaluate their own and others’ work to strengthen its visual impact and to meet Art and Design objectives. Marie Theresa worked closely with parents, communicating about their child’s experience, working within the school’s policies framework such as health and safety, safeguarding, diversity and educational targets.

#MyCaterham

Marie Theresa Crick crafted a film programme for all pupils at Caterham School from the Prep School to Sixth Form, to create a collaborative project to convey Caterham School through the eyes of pupils. Pupils were involved in pre-production, production and post-production which included storyboarding, directing, lighting, editing and working across the different Year Groups.

Community engagement has included curating and running creative courses as part of MTC Digital Creative, exhibitions and a Film Oscars and Festival, attended by over 300 people, which included the school and wider community, and film professionals from Channel 4 to documentary filmmakers for ITV and Sky at Caterham School, to support collaborative learning spaces. Marie Theresa is a great believer in community liaison, having linked charities and young people and initiated online community engagement through sourcing volunteers for multiple campaigns and events.

Film Clubs, Workshops and Holiday Schools

Marie Theresa has built infrastructures of co-curricular programmes in Film, Photography and Graphic Design which have supported pupils to run their own film clubs, workshops and take part in holiday schools. The Film Club at Caterham School became so popular that there were Film Club seminars four times a week. One seminar become a space for Senior pupils to teach film to young pupils across the Senior School and Prep School. Each year pupils would showcase their creative work at a Film Screening, this started with an Oscars Night and culminated in the final year as a Film Festival attended by 300 people.
