3 bonus ‘How To’ videos for students to keep and try activities at their own pace as well as many included in the core course.

All taught information will be shared with students to be returned to after each session.

These sessions will explore photography through our DSLR cameras to deconstruct the world around us, to see differently.

Across the sessions we will explore photography together through experimentation whilst picking techniques up along the way.

There will be opportunities to share your own work in the sessions and to be part of an online collective exhibition. This course is great for people looking to learn and advance their DSLR skills and expand from the beginners course.  

Session One

Introduction into using your camera

  • Learn to see the world through your camera

  • Using your camera in manual mode

  • Exploring aperture, focal length, selective focus, white balance, metering and exposure compensation further

  • Exploring further camera settings/menus on

  • Inspiration from photographers and examples

  • Insight into the history of photography (taster for the theory course)

Session Two

Out and About – Wildlife photography

  • Wildlife workshop – planning and the technical details behind capturing wildlife

  • Using fieldcraft – learning how to track and capture magical natural behaviour

  • Techniques to freeze action

  • Using colour, focus and props

  • Photoshop edit tips – levels, dodge, sharpen and vibrancy

  • Inspiration from photographers

  • Forms in nature (expanding of textures, leading lines etc)

  • Time for members to share their work and discuss

Session Three

Landscape Photography

  • Pros and cons of mirrorless vs SLR

  • Looking at lenses to choose the right one

  • How to shoot with different focal lengths

  • Exposure and tone features

  • HDR vs filters

  • Focus stacking

  • Working with low light

  • Inspiration from photographers

  • Time for members to share their work and discuss

Session Four

Expanding portrait and photo diary knowledge with SLRs

  • Creating fun portraits with a flash and flour

  • Working with low sun

  • Exploring low-light – creating atmosphere, exposure values, diffuse highlights and getting creative

  • Enhancing low-light images in Photoshop

  • Creating drama in portraits using Lightroom

  • Create loveable pet portraits

  • Time for members to share their work and discuss

  • Looking into drone photography

  • Take macro photography further

Session Five

Delve deeper into Photoshop and Lightroom

  • Ones to Watch - chosen by British Journal of Photography 

  • Processing RAW files in Lightroom

  • Workflows to start with in Lightroom

  • Key new features of Photoshop 2021

  • Working with adjustment layers in Photoshop

  • Power of black and white

  • Luminosity masking

Get Creative

  • Kaleidoscopic flare effects

  • Tips for food photography
